Physical Therapy and Urinary Incontinence

Happy woman doing pelvic muscle exercise on mat Sep15th 2021

Do your friends and family comment on your “small bladder”? Do you leak urine when you cough, sneeze or laugh? Or maybe you feel like you always have to rush to the bathroom and sometimes don’t make it in time. Did you know physical therapy can help with this? We can assess if the incontinence or urgency issues you are having are stemming from improper use of the muscles of the pelvic floor. Muscle weakness due to pregnancy may also lead to urinary incontinence and difficulty activating core muscles. These muscles act as a sling to support the pelvic organs and have openings called sphincters that control urination and defecation. If these muscles are overactive, underactive, or not functioning properly, it can result in urgency, frequency, and incontinence of urine and faecal matter. The good news is, there are many treatment options that can help with these symptoms! No one should have to struggle with urgency and incontinence.
