The vestibular system is the sensory system that is responsible for providing our brain with information about motion, head position, and spatial orientation. The vestibular system is also involved with motor functions that allows us to maintain balance, stabilize our head and body during movement. Dizziness is a common symptom of a dysfunction within the vestibular system and can be related to many diagnoses. Some areas that can cause dizziness are vertigo, muscle spasms, neck pain, headaches, concussions, TMJ, and many more.
Physical Therapy can help you with your dizziness and vertigo by taking a global approach. Your Physical Therapist would assess your symptoms and medical history to fully understand what the contributing causes of your dizziness are. Once your Physical Therapist sets your plan of care they would begin treating your dizziness. How your symptoms will be treated will depend on what pieces are contributing to your symptoms.
Some areas that will be worked on could include cervical soft tissue mobilization, balance exercise, vestibular exercises, activities of daily living, body mechanic training, postural training, and many more as indicated. Each session would be individualized to each patient in order to progress each patient toward meeting their goals.
