Sciatica: The Myth
According to the dictionary, Sciatica is “pain affecting the back, hip, and outer side of the leg, caused by compression of a spinal nerve root in the lower back, often owing to degeneration of an intervertebral disk.”
Basically, Sciatica is a fancy word for posterior leg pain that is coming from your back. What it is not is a disease or condition that you have to live with. Unfortunately, I have recently interacted with more and more patients who have this misconception about Sciatica and they don’t know that physical therapy can help treat it!
Your sciatic nerve comes from your spinal cord and leaves your pelvis below your piriformis muscle and goes slightly towards the outside of your hip before it goes down the back of your thigh. It is the largest nerve in your body and can be easily aggravated by repetitive movements throughout our daily activities including bending, seating, lifting.
Through physical therapy, you can learn to move better – how to improve your core strength, postural awareness, specific exercises to stretch your legs and hips, and how to decrease neural tension. Most importantly, physical therapy can help alleviate your symptoms and keep you active… something near and dear to Coloradans 😊
