Sarah Baily, Doctor of Physical Therapy

Many people have heard of vertigo, the sensation of dizziness, but not many people know that this can be treated with physical therapy. This condition can be quite debilitating, but can be easily treated with a trained Physical Therapist.

The most common form of vertigo is Benign Positional Paroxysmal Vertigo (BPPV) and it occurs when the crystals in the inner ear become displaced. This causes dizziness and nausea with changes in head position, commonly when rolling over in bed or turning the head. It comes on suddenly and creates the sensation of the rooming spinning or the body moving.

Your physical therapist will perform a maneuver to re-position the crystals in the inner ear. Then, we will begin vestibular rehabilitation which includes balance training, gaze stabilization exercises, and habituation exercises to decrease the sensitivity to the symptoms and environment. People with BPPV typically respond very well to treatment and often only need a few visits to return to their normal lives.  If you or someone you know experiences these symptoms, come in to Rocky Mountain Physical Therapy for an evaluation and treatment.

Rocky Mountain PT has turned out to be an excellent choice in doing my therapy. From the ease of scheduling through the office to the way they make you feel throughout the entire process is great. I had Derrick for the majority of my appointments and he was able to help alleviate so many of the post surgery issues I was having. He was always open ears to how I was feeling and I could tell he has a passion for really trying to "help". From one small business to another its nice to see a company that truly cares. Thank You Derrick!
