The crazy holiday session is fast approaching and with it not only comes joy, thanks and fun but also stress. Stress can cause many undesirable physiological changes in the body including headache, muscle tension or pain, chest pain, fatigue, change in sex drive, stomach upset, or sleep problems. Psychological changes may also occur including anxiety, restlessness, lack of motivation or focus, irritability or anger, sadness or depression. So what can be done to avoid the nasty effects of stress and keep the holidays enjoyable? Several recommendations include use of exercise, relaxation techniques, appropriate sleep, balance diet and avoiding excessive uses of alcohol, tobacco, or caffeine. Other ideas that may be helpful particularly around the holidays are:
· Time management and planning ahead. Make that list, check it twice and start ticking off “jobs” as you finish them. Make adjustments as needed but also remember, let the little things go.
· Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Swap kid watching duties with a friend in order to get things done or ask a loved one to help with larger tasks. We all needs assistance at times!
· Make a budget and stick to it. A lot of discipline is necessary, but in the end you’ll be much happier you did than taking on the additional financial stress.
· Remember, saying no is ok. Don’t over-commit in order to please others. In the end, you are the one who suffers.
· If taking the small steps to reduce stress is not enough, visit with you PCP for a recommendation for some counseling. This may help steer you in a direction of improved mental and physical well being.
