As we are in the summer months with a variation of weather leads to increased physical activity outdoors. Emergency Rooms also is an increase for injuries of at least 18% during these months. Injuries can be from fractures, strains, pain, heat exhaustion, etc. Rocky Mountain Physical Therapy can help you rehab from these issues, but it is important to take the proper precautions to avoid injuries this summer.

  1. Wear Proper Foot Protection: Closed toe shoes for activities like: hiking, running, yard work. Wearing flip flops can cause you to trip. The wrong type of shoe can cause increased plantar fascia/foot pain or ankle and knee pain.
  2. Don’t Ask Your Muscles To Over Work Too Soon: Warm up your muscles (don’t just go straight into heavy lifting or running), work up to these tasks with paying close attention to body mechanics and form.
  3. Drink Water: Your body can quickly dehydrated or have a depleted water supply with hotter weather. Water helps lubricate your muscles. Dehydration can cause cramping.
  4. Take Breaks: Don’t ask your body to go 24/7 during the summer if it didn’t do anything during the winter months. Let your muscles relax. Listen to your body.
